The software keyboard on your Android phone is quite a sophisticated tool. It's capable of auto-corrections and gives you easy access to a number of special characters and accented letters. We'll show you some of the more advanced features of the keyboard including how it can improve your typing in this tutorial.

Tutorial Notes

· The Android keyboard will automatically capitalize the first letter in a sentence and, if you insert a period, the next sentence will be automatically capitalized too.

· If you make a small typo, then auto-correct will help you out. Hit the space bar or insert punctuation and the word will be corrected.

· If you want to capitalize a word yourself, just hit the Shift key, which looks like an upward arrow. The next character you type will be in sentence case.

· If you want to write in all capitals, double tap on the Shift key. You'll see a little green indicator to show you're in caps lock.

· The Android keyboard can also auto-complete some words. Just tap the word in the auto-complete bar to insert it.

· Tap the microphone icon to the left of the space bar. Say what you want transcribed and it will be inserted. Pressing backspace will remove the entire transcription. Pressing space will accept it.

· You can find somewhat less common punctuation marks by tapping and holding on the period button. Slide your finger to select the appropriate character and then release to insert it.

· Some other keys have secondary functions too. For example, press the Y key to insert that character. Press and hold Y to see other options. We can insert an accented character or even the number 6.

· In the lower-left of the keyboard, tap the ?123 button to access numbers and punctuation. Some of these characters have alternates as well. Press and hold on a key to see other options. We can insert fractions by pressing and holding on a number key, for example.

· When we're using the numbers and punctuation keyboard, the Shift key turns into an ALT key. This is where you'll find alternate characters. A few of these have secondary functions too.

· Finally, back on the regular alpha keyboard, press and hold on the microphone icon. Slide over to select the settings icon. Here, you can access keyboard settings. We'll get into these in another tutorial.
