Many companies use virtual private networks, or VPNs, in order to securely share internal or confidential resources with employees or clients around the globe. This is an added layer of security that helps boost security. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to connect to a VPN through your Android phone after first configuring the connection.
Tutorial Notes
· Many companies will require that you use a VPN in order to access internal or confidential resources as it is much more secure than the Internet at large.
· To start, from a home screen, tap the menu button then Settings. Tap Wireless & networks and then select VPN settings.
· Tap the option to Add VPN.
· You're asked to select the type of VPN access you'd like to add. You'll need to talk to your network administrator to get this information.
· We'll be using the FreeVPN found at freevpn.co. We're not endorsing this specific free VPN but rather, using an example we can freely show the login credentials for.
· Select the type of VPN access you'd like to add. Your network administrator will have this information as well. In our FreeVPN example, we're selecting a PPTP VPN.
· Give the VPN connection a name by tapping the VPN name field. You can call the VPN connection anything you like. For example: WorkVPN. Tap OK when you're done.
· Tap on Set VPN server. This is the server address of your VPN. Again, you'll need to get this information from your network administrator. In our example, we'll use the server address bestfreevpn.com. Hit OK.
· Leave Enable encryption checked. Your network administrator can tell you if you need to enter any value for DNS search domains.
· When you're finished, tap the Menu key on your phone. Select Save.
· Now, to connect to your VPN, tap the entry under the VPN heading. Enter your username and password and tap Connect. You can opt to have your username saved, but you'll have to enter your password every time.
· Your phone will connect to the VPN server. This may take a little while to complete.
